Top 5 The Best Historical K-Dramas You Must-Watch

Historical Dramas Run The Gamut From Comedy To Brutality, Sometimes All In The Same Drama. Here Are Top 5 The Best Historical K-Dramas You Must-Watch

There are plenty of reasons to love Korean historical dramas: Sageuks is the perfect mix of royal romances, palace conspiracies, and aesthetic AF robes and scenery. And whether you consider yourself a history geek or not, historical K-dramas are also a great way to gain a little insight into Korea’s fascinating past. Whatever the reasons, the historical drama is an important K-drama staple. Here are my picks for the 5 best!

1. Jumong

Chronicles the life of Jumong Taewang, founder of the kingdom of Goguryeo, as he tries to take his place on the throne. Highly fictionalized as the details of this period have been lost. Jumong proved to be extremely popular and was part of the Hallyu wave. It was the highest-rated drama of 2006. Vivid and at times breathtaking, this drama maintained a high standard of quality throughout each of its 81 episodes.

2. Gu Family Book

If you’ve only watched new K-dramas, you’ll have to adjust your expectations on the visual quality of this one. It may be a bit rough around the edges – it’s only from 2013! – but you won’t want to miss Lee Seung Gi as a half human/half animal who struggles as a human while falling in love with one. It also features Yoo Yeon Seok who’ll be familiar to anyone watching Mr Sunshine!

3. Moon Embracing The Sun

A love story between a fictional king from the Joseon era and a female shaman who have to conduct their romance in private, plus political powers and conspiracies – it’s all the things you love to see in a historical drama. This drama starring Kim Soo Hyun and Han Ga In was a massive hit when it aired.

4. Sungkyunkwan Scandal

Set in an era when society didn’t allow women to be educated or employed, Park Min Young (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim) plays a woman who disguises herself as her brother so she can work. Through a series of incidents – and of course romances – she ends up studying in disguise and yes, also falling in love. It is a historical drama after all.

5. Hwarang

An elite group of young men are brought together to form Hwarang – soldiers to protect the Queen. Among them is the prince of the Silla Kingdom, but no one knows who he is. Starring an incredible ensemble cast: Park Hyung Sik, Park Seo Joon and Go Ara as the leads, not to mention SHINee’s Minho and BTS’ V in smaller roles, this is the perfect blend of historical drama and lighthearted fun.
